Renowned media personality Stephanie Coker-Aderinokun has released an inspiring documentary titled “Where The Heck Is My Period?” to raise awareness and foster understanding about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age.
The documentary is a personal exploration of Coker-Aderinokun’s own journey with PCOS, which may cause infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess male hormone (androgen) levels, and the development of numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) in the ovaries, leading to the failure to regularly release eggs.
Coker-Aderinokun’s decision to share her story aims to break the silence and stigma associated with PCOS. The documentary provides an intimate look into her experiences, shedding light on the physical and emotional challenges that come with the condition.
“Where The Heck Is My Period?” features interviews with medical experts, providing viewers with a comprehensive understanding of PCOS. The documentary aims to educate the public about the symptoms, risks, and treatment options associated with the condition.
Coker-Aderinokun’s efforts to highlight PCOS through her documentary have been met with widespread praise. Her courage and openness in discussing her personal experiences have sparked important conversations about women’s health, particularly in communities where such topics are often considered taboo.
The release of “Where The Heck Is My Period?” marks a significant step forward in raising awareness about PCOS. It serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling in shedding light on important health issues and the need for continued advocacy and education in women’s health.
In response to the process of filming the documentary, producer Stephanie Coker Aderinokun said: “I’ve always been passionate about women’s health, especially women living with PCOS but I wanted them to feel seen, loved, understood and supported. Taking the big step of being vulnerable enough to share my story publicly was a big step I was willing to take. Although nerve-wracking. I’m glad I did it.”
The documentary, a production of SCA Studios, educates viewers of all backgrounds about this common yet misunderstood health concern, dismantling stigmas and fostering empathy. Distributed by FilmOne Entertainment and premiered at AFRIFF 2022, “Where the Heck Is My Period?” is set to reach an even broader audience as it is available for viewing on Friday, 15th of March, 2024 on Amazon Prime as the first licensed documentary in Nigeria.
