“Mandela: A Biography” by Martin Meredith is an in-depth exploration of the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century. The book offers a comprehensive account of Mandela’s journey from his early years in rural South Africa to his role as a leader in the anti-apartheid movement and eventually as the first democratically elected President of South Africa.

This book by Meredith on Mandela has 33 chapters revolving around several issues of the contemporary South African world and Africa as a continent. Mandela is a figure of struggle. He was sentenced to prison for 27 years for participating in the fight against apartheid (racial discrimination and segregation) in South Africa. Mandela fought alongside some of his friends and comrades including Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, and Yusuf Cachalia.

The strength of the biography is its exploration of the socio-political context in which Mandela lived. Meredith provides a nuanced understanding of apartheid and its impact on South Africa, contextualizing Mandela’s activism within the broader struggle against racial segregation and oppression. The book also sheds light on Mandela’s political ideology, his role within the African National Congress (ANC), and his strategies for achieving change through peaceful resistance and reconciliation.

Nelson Rohlihla Mandela’s life was full of hardship, trials and endurance. Still, he remained a true nationalist and Pan-Africanist.

Mandela lost his mother and his eldest son while staying at Robben Island prison. He was denied a chance to go to the funerals. His wife was also subjected to house arrests, detentions and prison sentences, although she violently killed innocent people through her organisation, “Mandela Football Club”.
