Witsprouts Books has acquired the debut short story collection “I Cry at the Feet of My Other Body” by Nigerian author Mustapha Enesi. The collection explores the complexities of womanhood, addressing themes such as motherhood, longing, grief, sexuality, and acceptance through a blend of realist and fabulist narratives. Set against the backdrop of women’s lives challenging patriarchal norms, Enesi captures the essence of human experience with sensitivity. The interconnected stories create a literary multiverse where every character holds significance.
Enesi, based in Lagos, has gained recognition for his literary achievements. His story “Safety Pins Are Bad Omens” won the 2021 Awele Creative Trust Award, praised for its urgency and tenderness. He also secured the 2021 K & L Prize for African Literature with “Kesandu” and was shortlisted for the 2021 Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize. His works have appeared in publications such as The Maine Review, Kalahari Review, and Litro Magazine.
Tope Akintayo, Publishing Director at Witsprouts Books, commented on the acquisition: “Mustapha Enesi’s collection exemplifies our mission to showcase and promote the finest works from the best Black voices in literature. His profound storytelling aligns with our commitment to fostering a deeper engagement with African arts and culture.”
Witsprouts Books, an imprint of Witsprouts Global Ltd, celebrates Black literary brilliance. Their anthology, “Love Grows Stronger in Death,” released on 24 May 2024, featured Enesi among other emerging writers.
“I Cry at the Feet of My Other Body” is scheduled for publication in late 2025.
