Critically acclaimed Yoruba epic film Orisa is set to premiere on Prime Video this February. The film, which was initially released in Nigerian cinemas in 2023, generated a total box office revenue of 127.89 million naira at the end of a 14-week cinematic run.
Set in an ancient Yoruba city, the film tells the story of a king who goes rogue and is punished with insanity, after which a long-term enemy seizes the opportunity to invade the kingdom, abduct its people, and attempt to take over the throne.
The film is produced and directed by Odunlade Adekola, and it stars notable actors such as Muyiwa Ademola, Femi Adebayo, Shaffy Bello, Eniola Ajao, Jide Kosoko, Dele Odule and Odunlade Adekola himself.
Odunlade Adekola, who is a veteran actor and filmmaker with almost three decades of experience, is known for his roles in productions such as President Kuti, King of Thieves, Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman, and Jagun Jagun. Having initially established himself a theater and film practitioner in the Yoruba-language segment of the Nigerian film industry, the actor has gone on to establish himself as a fan favorite in the mainstream.
On its initial release in the cinema, Orisa faced stiff competition from Hollywood blockbusters Oppenheimer and Barbie, both of which were released on the same day on July 13, 2023. Yet in its opening week, the film set a new domestic record of the biggest epic opening of the year, amassing 27.6 million naira.
Orisa will be available on Prime Video from February 2, 2024.
