Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter MohBad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, has died at the age of 27. His family confirmed his death in a statement posted on his Instagram account on Monday, September 13, 2023.
The statement read: “It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Promise Oladimeji Aloba PK/A Mohbad (Imole) today, the 12th of September, 2023. Mohbad was light until the very end, and as we mourn the loss of the brightness he carried, the family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time. Imole is finally at peace.”
The cause of death has not been disclosed by the family or his management. However, some reports have speculated that he might have suffered from a drug overdose or a heart attack.
MohBad was born on June 8, 1996 in Lagos, Nigeria. He started his music career in 2018 and rose to fame after releasing songs like “Feel Good”, “Ponmo” and “KPK (Ko Por Ke)” with producer Rexxie. He was signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Records until 2022 when he left the label due to some disagreements.
MohBad was known for his versatile style of rap, blending street slang, Yoruba language and English lyrics. He was also praised for his storytelling skills and his ability to connect with his fans through his music. He had collaborated with other popular artists such as Davido, Zlatan, Lil Kesh and Bella Shmurda.
His death has shocked and saddened many of his fans and colleagues in the music industry. They have taken to social media to express their condolences and pay tribute to the late star. Some of his notable songs have also been trending on various streaming platforms.
Ovie, MohBad’s promoter, confirmed his death on X (formerly known as Twitter) and wrote: “Confirmed. Mohbad is dead. Sad, sad day. R.I.P.” He also urged people to be respectful and not make baseless assumptions about the cause of death.
Joey Akan, the founder of Afrobeats Intelligence, shared his last encounter with MohBad on X and wrote: “Last time I saw Mohbad, we were in an apartment, a recording camp working on song selection for his last EP. Man gave me a weird sweet red wine, and we had a little good-natured argument over the final songs to make the project and the length of the EP. Rest in peace man.”
Omowunmi, MohBad’s wife, also posted a heartfelt message on her Instagram story and wrote: “I tried my best to make him stay. I loved him with all my heart. He was my everything. Please pray for me and our son. We miss him so much.”
MohBad’s funeral arrangements have not been announced yet by his family. He is survived by his wife and son.
