VARIETY— In 2019, a group of young Nigerians between the ages of 17 and 21 made a sci-fi short film on their phones called The Chase. They went viral on social media for this film and have been in the spotlight for important project launches, including the Flutterwave-presented We Are Here at the ArtxLagos event in 2021.
The group is currently making a short film called “War Is Coming”, which will be produced by Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary through their company, Revelations Entertainment.
In “War Is Coming,” the main character, Ola, is a brash teenager who discovers he is a demigod’s reincarnation. He then spirals into his destiny, not knowing what will happen next.
The film will be shown for the first time at the +234 Connect Festival: A Celebration of Nigerian Creativity by the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. It will also be released at the same time on the popular YouTube channel of The Critics Company.
The Critics Company is based out of the Nigerian city of Kaduna. Since they started in 2015, their goal has been to use film to create “magical experiences” for themselves and the rest of their community. Their work has been shown on the BBC, CNN, Reuters, Al-Jazeera, and the Indie Film Festival, among other places.
