In Sophomore Album, Asake Pays Homage to Jean-Michel Basquiat with Art by Ayanfe Olarinde

Asake, the Nigerian singer-songwriter who rose to fame with his debut album Mr Money With the Vibe, has paid homage to the legendary American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat on his second album, Work of Art. The album cover features a painting by Nigerian artist Ayanfe Olarinde, who recreated Basquiat’s signature style with a portrait of Asake.

On the track “Basquiat,” Asake celebrates his success and artistic vision, comparing himself to the influential painter who fused graffiti, neo-expressionism, and pop culture in his works. He sings: “Walking poetry I am / Greater/ I’m a work of art / Basquiat.”

Asake’s album, which was released on June 15, 2023, has received rave reviews from critics and fans alike, who praised his versatility and creativity. The album blends traditional and contemporary African music genres such as amapiano, fuji, Afro-fusion, R&B, and pop. It also features collaborations with Olamide.

Work of Art is available on all streaming platforms and is expected to be another hit for Asake, who has proven himself as one of the most promising and influential artists in the African music scene.
