Dieko Lawore’s Diary: This Fashion Illustrator Watches Anime to Concentrate While Working

Dieko Lawore, is a fashion designer and illustrator who creates 3D fashion art for pre-production, advertising, and editorial purposes. Dieko recently completed her Dailies, a design challenge where she shared new fashion illustrations daily for 30 days.

We had a chat with Dieko for a day, and she revealed that watching anime works the magic of keeping her focused while designing.

Here’s a juicy recap from Dieko’s POV.

A Day in the Life of Dieko Lawore

6:30 am – 10:30 am

I woke up at 6:30 am for morning devotion with my family.

Waking up early gives me jumpstart vibes, and I feel like if you wake up at a good time, you have a good chance of getting things done at a steady pace.

After devotion, I proceeded to do house chores and prepare for the day.

Sometimes I go back to bed after completing chores if I still feel sleepy. But today was different. I had my bath immediately and immersed myself in my skincare and self-care routine.

11am – 2pm

I started my work by 11 pm. I work remotely, so I do all my work from home and on my bed. I wouldn’t advise anyone to do that. Walking around and taking breaks while working is better, but I still do all my work in one position.

So for my work, I opened the Notion app on my iPad. I like having a task list because it makes accomplishing tasks easy. I already drafted a detailed task list at the beginning of the week, but this is just to give me a base as I remove or add things to the list daily.

Another thing I do while working is watching anime. I get distracted easily, so watching something I love keeps my mind focused. You would think that the subtitles are distracting, but here’s the trick. I like to rewatch things, so if I’m watching something like Attack on Titan, which I’ve seen four times, I don’t really need to look at the subtitles to know what’s going on.

2pm- 4pm

I took a break and went to my sister’s room for a bit of human interaction. She also works from home.

We ordered burgers for lunch from King’s Burger in Magodo. Omg, their burgers are amazing. My sister and I buy from them at least twice weekly.

While waiting for the burger, I scrolled through social media.

4pm- 6pm

I returned to work but got distracted a few minutes into that. My friends and I have been planning an Owambe party, and believe me when I say it has been chaotic. I jumped on a video call to pick the Aso Oke and Ankara fabrics for the occasion.

But the downside to the planning is how it has been clashing with work because I have everything planned out, and the calls often interrupt that.

6pm-10pm

I made dinner for everyone. I felt a little lazy today, so I cooked rice. After dinner, I went to my sister’s room to disturb her some more before retiring to my room to watch a movie. I prefer series because they are longer, making it easy to fall in love with the characters.

I’m currently watching Enter Galactic. I really love the animation, and it has a good plot.

My bedtime is 10 pm. I always ensure to abide by it. I did my night skincare routine and went to bed.

Rapid Cruise with Dieko Lawore

What is the cause of your most recent massive excitement?

When it comes to my work, I would say my dailies. It was an amazing experience. There were so many things I didn’t know I could do, and the dailies helped me discover them. The reception from people was encouraging too.

But personally, I would say my recent involvement with skincare. I purchased some skincare products, and my heart was filled with so much joy when they arrived.

How many hours of research do you put into achieving each design?

It’s not fixed. For instance, when doing my dailies, I mostly did 2 hours of research before designing, but if I’m working on a project, it might take a day or weeks.

What’s a website, app or online resource everyone should know about? Why?

YouTube. I learnt 70%  of the things I know on YouTube. I’ve never paid for a course.

Also, online forums. An example is Reddit and Clo3d’ s online forums. There’s always an answer to your questions because there’s a high probability someone has asked that same question before you.

Who would you choose if you could spend a day with one person?

Beyoncé

What’s your guilty pleasure?

I like watching shows with bad plots, and I like being stressed. It keeps me on my toes.

Where do you spend the most time online?

Netflix or Twitter

What can you be found doing when you’re not designing?

I am very likely asleep or with Bari when I’m not designing.

Would you rather be fire or water? Why?

Actually, water. I’m an astrology girl.

Fried rice or Jollof rice?

Jollof.

What do you do when nobody’s watching?

When no one is watching I have full conversations with myself about past experiences and why I reacted however I reacted.

What’s a funny tweet that’s stuck in your head?

I can’t really put a finger on it.

Who are the 10 fashion designers you’ll love to bring your illustrations to life?

Jacquemus, Robert Wun, Olivier Rousteing, Jean Paul Gaultier, Andrea Iyamah, Daniel Rose Berry, Casey Cadwallader, Sarah Burton, Anifa Mvuemba, Jemimah Kefas, and Priya Ahluwalia.
