Acclaimed Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage is set to make her first appearance on the silver screen in the movie, “Water and Garri,” scheduled for an exclusive premiere on Prime Video on May 10, 2024.
The movie is a product of Savage’s production house, Everything Savage, in collaboration with Unbound Studios, under the direction of renowned filmmaker Meji Alabi. Alabi, known for his work in music videos and film production, has collaborated with a host of top-tier artists in Nigeria and internationally, including the likes of Beyonce, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Nasty C, Popcaan, and Mr Eazi.
“Water and Garri” draws its inspiration from Savage’s second EP, which shares the same title and was launched in 2021. The five-track EP delves into themes of love, identity, and self-discovery, elements that are mirrored in the upcoming film.
The film features performances by Mike Afolarin (known for “Far From Home”), Jemima Osunde (from “New Money”), and Ghanaian actor Andrew Bunting (of “Dynamite”). The narrative unfolds in the city of Cape Coast, Ghana, and is brought to life through exceptional cinematography and storytelling.
The plot centers around Aisha (played by Savage), a driven fashion designer dealing with recent loss, who returns to her homeland after spending ten years in the U.S. Upon her return, she finds escalating tensions and as she reconnects with family, old friends, and a past love, she must confront her past and learn to live with her scars.
“Water and Garri” is penned by Comfort Emmanuel and produced by Jimi Adesanya (known for “Black is King”). The film is set to be accessible on Prime Video in 240 countries and territories worldwide.
