Nigerian-Tamil author Akwaeke Emezi, renowned for their literary works, has made a stunning entry into the music world with their debut EP titled “Stop Dying, You Were Very Expensive”. Released on March 8, the EP comprises seven remarkable tracks, marking a significant milestone in Emezi’s artistic journey.
Emezi’s debut EP is a testament to their dedication and hard work over the years. The EP includes their debut single “Banye” released last year and six other tracks. Grammy-winning Haitian DJ and record producer Michael Brun has executive produced the entire EP, with the exception of the song “Diabozinho”, which is produced by Ralph Hardy.
Emezi’s music, much like their literary works, beautifully explores themes of Igbo mythology, identity, and spirituality. They shared on Instagram, “making music as an igbo deity from the indigenous spirit center has been so freeing and i believe holding that center is vital to our liberation. immensely grateful to everyone who worked on this project—it has been an honor to collaborate with y’all #SDYWVE”.
The cover art for the EP, created by Paul Davey (@mattahan on Instagram), is a stunning representation of Igbo spirituality. The central portrait, possibly of Emezi, blends seamlessly into the pinkish-purple watercolor background, adding a mystical touch to the album.
Emezi’s debut EP is a testament to their determination and talent, having been created with “no label, no funding, no distributor? no wahala”, as they mentioned in their Instagram post.
